Christmas DIY Decorations

Sunday 24 November 2019

I love that Christmas is a time to slow down and be able to think about the little details, granted not everyone can but I make sure to book off a week or so to relax and my idea of relaxing involves a hot glue gun and a trip to Hobby Craft!

Here are a few simple DIY projects to decorate your house and table.

Winter Foliage Stars

These Martha Stewart creations make amazing table or fireplace decorations and smell divine, you could make them with any foiliage, I've included a picture of some examples below, If you use dried leaves these can be stored and used again. If you glue the leaves as flat as possible these would make great rustic placemats.

You will need:
10 basswood strips (24 inches each) per 36-inch star (Link)
Craft knife (Link)
Wood glue (Link)
Cut greens, such as rosemary, cedar, juniper, and boxwood
Hot-glue gun (Link)
Evergreen Wreath template

Method

  1. Cut wood strips in half to 12 inches each
  2. Using the temple as a guide, create the base with two strips in a cross and glue with wood glue, repeat the step and glue to the first pair to form a base with 8 spokes. Leave to dry.
  3. Glue wood strips to the end of each spoke so they meet at the tip and glue together 8 times until it resembles a star.
  4. Cut your greenery into pieces the same lengths as the sections of the wooden strips.
  5. Glue the greenery to the sticks with the hot glue gun.
  6. If you are hanging the stars repeat the greenery on the reverse side and add a hanging loop with some twine.

Christmas Tree Napkins
This is more of a folding technique than actual DIY but I saw them and just loved the result, these will definitley be featuring on my Christmas Table.

You will Need:
Square Forest Green Napkins (Link)

Method

  1. Fold the napkin in half.
  2. Repeat so it resembles a square.
  3. With the free edge corner (the ones that aren't a fold) Fold back one at once staggered so each point can be seen.
  4. Flip the napkin, there should be a straight edge and the opposite end should be a pointed, fold the two other points inward.
  5. Flip the napkin over and tuck each point into the above fold starting at the top.
  6. To go the extra mile I would run the iron over each to press the folds.

Pom Pom Wreath
I saw this on Modern Glam and had to share, it's amazing! I wouldn't put it on a door without some sort of porch because that's just a soggy wreath waiting to happen. This is top glue gun action and worth all the scorches you will get. I am tempted to do one and put it on the inside of my door!

Star Garland
This is a gorgeous addition to a christmas tree if you intertwine with some thin wire lights, I will be decorating the Fiddle Fig Leaf tree with it in my hallway. I saw this on LilyArdor (Link), it involves making your stars out of baking soda and cornflour so super cheap and easy.

Dried Orange Garland
I love drying oranges because your house smells delicious in the process, this garland looks so lovely on its own or with some greenery intertwined, it is so simple to make. If you don't want to make a garland you can use as pot pourri in a clear jar with some cinnamon and cloves.

You will need:
10 Oranges (I like to 3/4 Normal Oranges 1/4 Blood Oranges)
Twine
Sewing Needle

  1. Cut oranges about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Press the slices between paper towels to absorb some moisture.
  3. Place the slices on a lined baking tray and place in a 100c oven for about 4 hours turning half way.
  4. Once dry in the oven remove and dry further on a drying rack overnight. Make sure they are completely dry otherwise they will go mouldy.
  5. Using the twine and needle thread through the oranges mixing in the blood orange as you go, if you want to leave gaps between each slice knot the twine after each slice.

I have loads of decorating and DIY's on my Pinterest so check that out for more inspiration. (Link)
